The Israel National Culture Collection of Algae (INCCA), located at the Kinneret Limnological Laboratory (KLL), Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research (IOLR), comprises more than 100 strains of microalgae, representing the biodiversity of Israel’s waters. As of Dec. 2019, the collection is composed mainly of Chlorophyta (42 strains) and Cyanobacteria (40 strains), and a few representatives from other taxonomical groups (Fig. 1).
The culture collection was initiated in the 1970s to provide cultures of phytoplankton species from Lake Kinneret for experimental work. Since 2012 many species have been added to the collection as part of a project to DNA-barcode Lake Kinneret Phytoplankton DNA. In order to assist users and interested parties in the identification of the various species a publicly accessible, on-line catalogue was developed and is maintained.

Objectives:
• To enhance, expand, and maintain INCCA, a national culture collection of microalgae and cyanobacteria.
• To comply with international standards and achieve international accreditation by the the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC).
• To continue to provide support for research, industrial and educational purposes.
• To maintain and further develop the on-line Kinneret phytoplankton species photo-catalogue
to include all microalgae from Israel.
Culture Maintenance:
Currently most of INCCA strains were isolated from Lake Kinneret, a few were collected from other freshwater bodies in Israel. The collection is, however, constantly expanding. The cultures are mono-algal but non-axenic. The cultures are maintained on agar plates or liquid medium, at 20°C or 25°C, with constant illumination. The DNA Barcoding of the cultures is done using a two-loci system, based on the amplification and sequencing of the rbcL gene and the rRNA SSU-ITS region [1].
